Greg Smith GS-PL9 Review: Premium 9,000-lb Commercial Parking Lift

Greg Smith Equipment is the Indianapolis distributor that sells the Atlas line and, under its own name, a smaller range that includes the GS-PL9. The spec that defines it is weight: 2,900 lb crated, against 2,800 lb for the Atlas AP-9XL, 2,700 lb for the Dannmar DP-9 and 2,650 lb for the Rotary SPL-9HD. The extra steel is in the columns and platform cross-members, and it is why the distributor calls it commercial.

The rest of the numbers: 9,000 lb, a 116 in by 104 in platform, 92 in of drive-on width, a 76 in rise, an 8.5 in lowered height, dual heavy-duty mechanical locks, 220V single phase power, an extended warranty, and a price around $4,999, the highest here.

Who benefits from the heavier frame? A parking lift raising a 5,000 lb half-ton once a day is nowhere near the limit of any 9,000 lb design. One carrying a 7,500 lb three-quarter ton or a 9,000 lb Hummer EV twice a day is closer, and that is the lift the GS-PL9 is built to be.

The minimum ceiling is 12 ft, or 144 in, with a 76 in rise. That leaves 68 in of headroom on the upper platform at the minimum ceiling before an opener or lighting is subtracted. The trucks that justify a 9,000 lb lift are 76 to 81 in tall, so at 12 ft they park underneath a car, not on top. Truck on top needs about 12 ft 8 in to 13 ft 4 in to the lowest obstruction, depending on the truck.

Below the platform, the deck underside at full rise is about 67 in off the floor. A 76 in truck underneath means stopping the platform on a lower lock and reducing headroom above, which is the same math on every 9,000 lb lift in this group.

The 92 in drive-on width matches the Dannmar DP-9 and is 2 in short of the Atlas AP-9XL. A Ram 1500 at 82 in gets 5 in per side, an F-250 at 80 in gets 6 in. The 116 in platform length is 2 to 4 in shorter than the Atlas and Dannmar decks, which matters only at the long end of crew cab wheelbases; confirm the wheelbase with the distributor.

The GS-PL9 is the hardest install in this group. At 2,900 lb the platform sections and columns need a pallet jack or engine hoist and a crew of three, the job is two days, and Greg Smith Equipment has no installer network, so the buyer hires a local lift installer and works from the manual with the company's phone support behind it. The cons list is right that this is a job for professionals with equipment.

The concrete requirement is the class standard, 4 in of 3,000 psi slab, but the column loads at 9,000 lb with the heaviest frame are the highest in the residential class, and the floor should be known from a pour record or a core sample.

Power is 220V single phase on a dedicated circuit. With freight, an electrician and two days of hired labor the project runs around $6,300 to $6,800, which is the most expensive total here and about $500 more than a dealer-installed Rotary SPL-9HD. The 104 in platform plus columns also fills a standard bay wall to wall.

The GS-PL9 parks its load on dual heavy-duty mechanical locks, two independent positions per column that engage as the platform rises, so the stored vehicle sits on steel in four places and the hydraulics carry load only during travel. The circuit has a check valve, a flow control on descent and a manual lowering valve for a power outage. At this capacity the second lock is the feature to insist on, and it is here.

The extended warranty is the GS-PL9's commercial argument and the reason for $300 to $400 of its price. The spec sheet says extended coverage without terms, so the buyer should get the document from the distributor and read what is covered, for how long, and whether it depends on professional installation. A warranty that covers structure for a long period is worth something on a lift that will hold a truck over a car for 15 years; one that covers the power unit for an extra year is not worth $400.

There is no ALI/ETL certification. The 9,000 lb rating is the distributor's figure, not one verified by an independent lab to the ANSI/ALI ALCTV standard, which at a $4,999 price is the cons list's fair complaint.

The Dannmar DP-9 is around $4,599: 9,000 lb, a 118 in by 104 in deck, the same 92 in of width, the same 76 in rise, dual locks, 2,700 lb, sold and installed through BendPak dealers. It is $400 cheaper, 2 in longer and comes with an installer. For a half-ton household it is the better buy and it is not close.

The Rotary SPL-9HD is around $4,699: 9,000 lb, a 116 in by 102 in deck, 90 in of width, 76 in of rise, ALI/ETL certified, 2,650 lb, dealer-installed. It is $300 cheaper than the GS-PL9 and it is the only certified 9,000 lb lift here. If a permit office or insurer is involved, it is the only choice.

The GS-PL7 is the same distributor's 7,000 lb lift at around $3,999 with an 86 in deck and a 2,300 lb frame. The $1,000 between them buys 2,000 lb, 6 in of width and 600 lb of steel. The GS-PL9 earns its place only for the heavy end of the truck market: three-quarter tons, heavy-duty EVs, and buyers who want the most frame under them and have read the warranty.
