Two measurements decide which lift you can buy: the height to the lowest thing hanging from your ceiling, and the height of the tallest vehicle you will put on the lift. Enter both and the calculator shows which lift types fit, how much rise you can actually use, and what to shop for.

With 10 ft of clearance and a 60 in vehicle, here is what fits. "Usable rise" is how high you can actually go before the roof (or crossbar) runs out of room, with 6 in of margin.

How the numbers work

For a 4-post or parking lift the vehicle rides on top, so the ceiling must clear the vehicle's roof at full rise: vehicle height plus maximum rise plus a few inches of margin. For a 2-post lift the vehicle hangs from the arms and the roof usually stays below the crossbar, so the limit is the lift's own overall height (typically 140 to 145 in for an overhead model, about 110 to 115 in for a floor-plate model). Scissor and portable lifts have no columns at all; their limit is simply vehicle height plus rise, which is why a mid-rise scissor lift fits under an 8 ft ceiling.

Common questions

How much ceiling height do I need for a 2-post lift?

An overhead (clear-floor) 2-post lift needs about 11 ft 6 in from the floor to the lowest obstruction, because the crossbar sits above the columns. Floor-plate 2-post lifts skip the overhead beam and fit under roughly 10 ft, at the cost of a hump between the columns.

How do I work out the ceiling height for a 4-post lift?

Add the height of the vehicle you will park on top to the lift's maximum rise, then add about 6 in of clearance. A 58 in sedan on a 72 in rise needs about 136 in, or 11 ft 4 in. If you only lift for maintenance and never store a second car underneath, you can stop the lift short and get by with less.

What car lift works with an 8-foot ceiling?

Mid-rise scissor lifts (about 45 to 48 in of rise) and portable frame lifts like the QuickJack (about 20 to 24 in) both work under 8 ft. You will not get full standing room underneath, but you get wheels-off access for brakes, suspension and exhaust work.

Do I measure to the ceiling or to the garage door?

Measure to the lowest obstruction in the lift's footprint: the open garage door, its track, the opener, lights, ductwork or a beam. For a 2-post lift the overhead crossbar must clear all of them. Many garages have 10 ft of drywall but only 8 ft 6 in under the open door.
