Challenger E10 Two Post Lift 10,000 lbs Review: The Professional Standard for Home Garages

ALI certification is not a sticker a manufacturer buys. An independent laboratory evaluates a specific model against the ANSI/ALI ALCTV standard, covering rated load, the mechanical locks, the equalization system, stability and the labeling, and the model then appears in the Automotive Lift Institute directory. Anyone can search that directory by model and confirm the E10 is listed. Most 2-post lifts sold to home buyers are CE self-certified, which means the maker signed its own form.

The practical difference shows up in three places. Homeowner and business insurers increasingly ask for a certified lift. A municipal inspector looking at a home shop that takes outside work will ask the same question. And resale on a certified lift holds up, because the buyer can verify what they are getting.

For a garage that only ever lifts the owner's cars, the label is reassurance rather than a requirement, and $4,299 is a lot to pay for reassurance. For anything with a customer or an insurer attached, it is the whole reason to choose this lift.

10,000 lb covers a three-quarter-ton crew cab with a loaded bed, a one-ton unloaded, a full-size van and anything lighter. 73 in of rise is the most in this comparison group and puts a truck frame at chest height for a six-foot mechanic, which is the difference between standing under a lift and stooping under it.

The arms are asymmetric, so the vehicle sits rearward of the columns and the doors open with it raised. On a 3HP power unit the lift cycles quickly for its capacity, though rise time depends on the load and the fluid temperature.

Overall height is 147 in, or 12 ft 3 in, and the overhead shut-off bar sits above the beam, so the working minimum is about 12 ft 5 in. That is the tallest ceiling requirement of any lift in this group and the single most common reason a buyer has to pass on the E10. Measure to the garage door track, the opener rail and any light fixture, not to the drywall.

Challenger specifies a minimum 4 in slab of cured 3,000 psi concrete, and the manual sets the anchor pattern and torque. At 1,750 lb this is the heaviest lift in the group, and the freight bill and the rigging both reflect that. Two people with an engine hoist can stand the columns; the overhead beam wants three.

The reason to buy an E10 from a dealer rather than a marketplace is that dealers install. Challenger sells through a distribution network with installers who anchor the lift, shim it, set the cable tension and hand over a signed commissioning sheet. That sheet is what an insurer or an inspector wants to see, and paying for it undoes most of the argument for a cheaper uncertified lift.

Power is 220V single phase on a dedicated circuit sized for the 3HP motor. There is no 110V option and there should not be; a 10,000 lb lift on a household circuit would cycle slowly and cook the pump.

The E10 has automatic mechanical locks in both columns that engage as the carriage rises, a single point lock release for lowering, arm restraints that lock under load, and a cable equalization system that keeps the carriages level. None of that is unusual on a good lift. What the Gold Label adds is that a laboratory confirmed the locks hold at rated load and that the equalization system meets the standard, rather than the factory asserting it.

Warranty runs 5 years structural and 3 years on hydraulics, which is the longest hydraulic coverage in this comparison and the coverage that matters, because pumps and cylinders fail long before columns do. Challenger has been building lifts in Louisville, Kentucky since 1980, and parts come from a domestic distributor rather than a container.

The maintenance the warranty assumes is simple: check the fluid level, grease the arm pins, inspect the cables, and confirm the locks engage at every position. Skipping it is the usual reason a claim is refused.

The BendPak XPR-10AS at $4,035 is the closest rival and the better buy for most home garages. It is 10,000 lb, asymmetric, ALI and ETL listed, dual-synchro equalized, gives the same 73 in of rise, and needs 11 ft 6 in of ceiling against the E10's 12 ft 5 in. It costs $264 less. Where the E10 answers back is warranty depth, 5 years structural and 3 years hydraulic against BendPak's 1 year parts and lifetime frame, plus the dealer install.

The BendPak XPR-10A at around $5,299 has extended arms and the same certification for $1,000 more, which is hard to justify unless the extra arm reach is genuinely needed.

The Dannmar D-10 at around $3,799 is 10,000 lb and CE certified only, symmetric, with a 3-year full warranty. It saves $500 and gives up the label and the door clearance.

Ranked on ceiling, the XPR-10AS wins. Ranked on paperwork and coverage, the E10 does.

Buy the E10 if the work involves anyone else's vehicle, if an insurer or an inspector has asked about certification, or if a diesel crew cab needs to go up regularly and the garage has the height for it. Buy it if a dealer install with a signed commissioning sheet is worth paying for. The combination of Gold Label, 73 in of rise and 3 years of hydraulic coverage is not available anywhere else at this price.

Skip it if the ceiling measures under 12 ft 5 in to the lowest obstruction. That is the hard stop, and the XPR-10AS solves it for less money with the same certification. Skip it if the heaviest vehicle is a half-ton and the lift will see a dozen jobs a year, because a $2,400 Atlas 9KOHX does that work. And skip it if the plan is a weekend install on an uninspected slab, since anchoring a certified lift to bad concrete voids the only thing worth paying for.
