BendPak RBJ6000 Review: The Rolling Bridge Jack That Does It All

BendPak's RBJ series was designed to ride the runways of a four-post lift, raising one axle so the wheels hang free for brake and suspension work. The RBJ6000 in this configuration puts the same air-over-hydraulic scissor on heavy locking casters so it rolls across a shop floor instead. It slides under the front or rear of a vehicle at 4 in of ground clearance, raises that end to 32 in on shop air, and sets on mechanical locks. Capacity is 6,000 lb, far more than any single axle of a passenger vehicle or half-ton truck carries.

That makes it a one-end lift, and the whole design follows from it. There is no per-vehicle frame positioning as with a QuickJack, because the pads land on frame rails or pinch welds near the axle. There is no power cord, because the pump runs on air. And there is no reason to drive the car anywhere, because the jack goes to the car.

At 72 in long, 40 in wide and 350 lb per unit, it is a shop tool priced at around $2,399, and BendPak's dealer network and 5-year structural warranty come with it.

The 6,000 lb rating means the RBJ6000 under the nose of a 5,600 lb Tahoe is carrying about half its limit, since the front axle of that truck holds roughly 3,000 lb. Capacity is never the question with this tool. The 32 in of rise is 4 in more than the Atlas MR6K and puts a sedan's rocker at about 37 in, enough to sit upright at a wheel well or roll a transmission jack under on its lowest setting. It is not standing height.

The jobs that fit are the ones done at one end of a car: brakes, rotors, tires, wheel bearings, control arms, tie rods, struts, and exhaust sections near the axle. Oil changes work with the front up and the rear chocked. What does not fit is anything that needs the whole underside level and clear, which is a transmission pan, a full exhaust or a fuel tank.

The 4 in collapsed height is an inch taller than the Atlas MR6K's 3 in, and that inch matters for cars on coilovers. A stock car clears it easily; a lowered one may need a short ramp to get the jack under the lift points.

The RBJ6000 is air-over-hydraulic. A compressor feeds an internal pump that raises the scissor, and once the mechanical locks are set the air line can be disconnected and the unit stays put. BendPak specifies the pressure and volume the pump needs, and a typical 20 to 30 gallon garage compressor meets it. A garage with no air has no way to raise this jack, which is the single biggest reason to look elsewhere.

The floor is the second constraint. A 350 lb unit on casters rolls well on smooth, sealed, level concrete and badly on broom-finished slab, lipped expansion joints or cracks. A sloped floor lets a loaded unit creep, which is what the caster locks exist to prevent; BendPak's manual treats setting them as mandatory before every lift. Practically, the RBJ6000 lives inside one shop or garage and does not go out to a gravel drive.

There is no installation. The unit arrives on a pallet, the pads are adjusted for the first vehicle, and the air line connects. That is a short job for one person. Two units for whole-vehicle lifting are possible but are not synchronized, so both ends must be raised in steps with attention to keeping the car level.

The RBJ6000 has mechanical safety locks that engage as the scissor rises, so the vehicle sits on steel once the lift stops. An overload valve in the hydraulic circuit prevents the air pump from pushing past the rated capacity, and a flow control meters the descent. Caster locks hold the unit still under load. Lowering requires a brief raise to free the locks and then a controlled release.

Certification is where rolling jacks differ from platform lifts. The ALI program covers rolling bridge jacks primarily as accessories to certified four-post lifts, and BendPak's RBJ series is certified in that role. As a standalone floor jack on casters the unit falls outside that scope, so a commercial shop should confirm with its insurer how it treats the tool before putting it in a bay. For a home garage that is a paperwork question, not a mechanical one; the scissor and locks are the same either way.

The warranty is 5 years on structure and 1 year on components, which is the longest structural cover on any rolling jack in this group. On a tool whose casters and air pump are the wear items, the 1-year component cover is the number to note.

The Atlas MR6K (around $1,799) is the direct competitor: an air-hydraulic rolling jack rated at 6,000 lb with 28 in of rise, a 3 in profile, 280 lb, and a 2-year warranty. The BendPak costs $600 more and buys 4 in of rise, a 5-year structural warranty, BendPak's dealer network and a heavier build. The Atlas gets under lower cars. For a shop using the jack daily, the BendPak is worth the difference; for a home garage lifting one end of a car twice a month, the Atlas does the same work.

The Forward MR-6 (around $2,299) is a 650 lb whole-vehicle scissor platform on casters that rises to 34 in on 110V. It costs $100 less than the RBJ6000, lifts the whole car, and needs no air. It rolls less easily and cannot go to a car in a driveway. Choose by whether one-end or whole-car lifting is the daily job.

The BendPak MD-6XP (around $2,899) is the fixed mid-rise: 48 in of rise, ALI/ETL certified, 850 lb, whole-vehicle. It is the answer for a dedicated bay; the RBJ6000 is the answer for a shop with several.

The RBJ6000 is for a small shop or a serious home garage with a compressor, a good floor and more than one vehicle, where most work happens at one end of the car and the lift needs to go to the vehicle rather than the other way around. Tire and brake work across a fleet of family cars is the ideal use, and shops that already run a BendPak four-post will recognize the tool from their runways.

It is the wrong buy for a garage without air, for a floor with joints and cracks, and for anyone who expects the whole car up at standing height. It is also poor value as a whole-vehicle lift, because two units cost around $4,800, which is more than a certified mid-rise for less rise and no synchronization.

For one-end work in a shop with air, the RBJ6000 is the rolling jack we would buy over the Atlas MR6K when the tool will earn its keep daily. If it will earn it monthly, keep the $600 and buy the Atlas.
