BendPak MD-6XP Review: Premium Mid-Rise Scissor Lift for Low Ceilings

The MD-6XP is a low-profile scissor platform: a 73 in by 63 in frame that sits 4.5 in tall on the floor, with two rubber-padded lifting arms per side that meet the car at its pinch welds or frame points and raise it to 48 in. BendPak has built lifts since 1965 and sells the MD-6XP into quick-service shops as much as home garages, which is why it carries ALI/ETL certification and a 5-year structural warranty that most mid-rise competitors do not match.

The class it belongs to solves one specific problem. A 2-post lift needs roughly 11 ft of ceiling and anchors set in 4 in of good concrete. A portable frame lift like the QuickJack BL-5000SLX needs neither but stops at 24 in. The MD-6XP splits the difference: no ceiling requirement beyond the car's own height plus 4 ft, no anchoring required on a sound slab, and enough rise to stand next to a wheel well or sit upright underneath.

The 6,000 lb rating covers every passenger car, every crossover and most half-ton trucks at the curb. The wheels hang free, so tire, brake and suspension work is unobstructed.

Three numbers decide whether the MD-6XP fits a garage: the 4.5 in lowered height, the 63 in width and the 48 in rise. The lowered height is the one that matters most for a two-car garage, because it is low enough for a stock sedan or SUV to drive over and park on top of. A car lowered on aftermarket springs may scrape, and BendPak's approach ramps are the fix. The 63 in width needs a couple of feet of walking room on each side to be useful.

At 48 in of rise a sedan's rocker sits around 52 in off the floor, which puts the underside at chest height for someone standing and leaves room for a transmission jack. A ceiling of 8 ft accommodates a car up to about 4 ft tall at full rise, so a normal sedan or crossover clears with a foot to spare. A tall SUV under an 8 ft ceiling runs out of room before the lift does, which limits standing-height work rather than ruling the lift out.

The 73 in length means the lift catches the lift points of long-wheelbase vehicles without the arms hanging past the rockers.

The MD-6XP ships at about 850 lb on a pallet, so delivery with a liftgate and a pallet jack or engine hoist to move it is the first cost to plan for. BendPak's manual describes the setup as positioning the platform, leveling it with shims, connecting the power unit hydraulics, filling the reservoir and running the lift through unloaded cycles to bleed the system before the first vehicle goes on. That is a few hours for two people with basic tools, a moderate job rather than an easy one.

Power is 110V or 220V. On 110V the lift works, and BendPak's own guidance is that 220V gives a faster rise and less strain on the motor for repeated cycles. A home garage doing one lift a week is fine on a dedicated 20-amp 110V circuit; a shop should wire 220V.

The floor needs to be flat, level and sound. Anchoring is optional on a good slab because the platform's weight and footprint keep it put, but BendPak specifies a minimum concrete thickness and strength in the manual, and a heaved or cracked slab should be repaired first. Once placed, the lift is a fixture. At 850 lb nobody moves it for a garage sale.

The MD-6XP uses automatic multi-position safety locks that engage as the platform rises, so the car can be set on steel at several heights rather than only at the top. Lowering requires raising the platform slightly to unload the locks before they release, which is the correct sequence for a scissor lift and means the locks never let go under load. The hydraulic circuit has a pressure relief valve ahead of the cylinder and a flow control on the descent, so an open release cannot drop the vehicle.

The certification is the part we weigh most. ALI/ETL certification means an independent lab tested a production unit to the ANSI/ALI ALCTV standard for structure, hydraulics and controls, and the model is listed in the ALI directory. Neither the Dannmar DMR-6 nor the Forward FSL-6 lists ALI certification on its spec sheet. It is also the reason a small shop can put the MD-6XP on the floor and satisfy an insurer or inspector.

BendPak's warranty is 5 years on structure. Hydraulic and electrical components carry shorter cover, and the rubber lift pads are consumables.

The Dannmar DMR-6 is the closest competitor: 6,000 lb, 47 in of rise, 4.75 in collapsed, around 900 lb, and around $2,499. Dannmar is BendPak's value brand, so the two share a design lineage, and the $400 gap buys the ALI/ETL listing, a 5-year rather than 3-year structural warranty, and a slightly lower collapsed height. In our view the certification alone is worth the difference for anyone who will work under the lift regularly; the paint and badge are not.

The BendPak RBJ6000 is a different animal, a pneumatic rolling bridge jack at around $2,399 that rises 32 in and needs shop air. It suits a shop with air and several vehicles to move between, not a home garage with one outlet.

The QuickJack BL-5000SLX at around $1,499 is the choice when the lift has to disappear. It gives half the rise and half the weight, and it stands against a wall. The MD-6XP gives standing-height access and a certified structure, and it stays where you put it. Nobody needs both; pick based on whether the bay is a workspace or a parking spot.

The MD-6XP is for the owner who has outgrown a floor jack and a frame lift, has a ceiling under 10 ft, and can give one bay to a lift that cars park over but that never leaves. It is also a sensible first lift for a small independent shop that wants an ALI-listed unit for quick-service work without pouring footings for a 2-post. Two jobs a month is roughly where the around $2,899 price starts to make sense against shop labor.

It is the wrong buy for someone whose garage must be cleared for two cars and a bicycle every evening; a QuickJack stores, this does not. It is also the wrong buy for anyone with an 11 ft ceiling and a sound 4 in slab, because a certified 2-post at similar money gives 70 in of rise and a clear floor. And a rolling bridge jack such as the RBJ6000 serves a shop with air and multiple bays better.

For the garage with a low ceiling and a dedicated bay, the MD-6XP is the mid-rise we would buy, and the ALI listing and 5-year structural warranty are why it beats the cheaper lookalikes.
