BendPak PL-6SR Review: Short Rise 6,000-lb Parking Lift for Low Ceilings

The PL-6SR is BendPak's low-ceiling parking lift. It keeps the 6,000 lb rating and the 104 in by 94 in platform of a standard lift and cuts the rise from 72 in to 56 in, which drops the minimum ceiling from 11 ft 6 in to 9 ft 6 in. Lowered height is 6 in, drive-on width is 82 in, shipping weight is 1,800 lb, the lightest here, and the price is around $3,599.

The cost of that 16 in is paid underneath. With the deck at 56 in and the platform structure taking a few inches, the space below is roughly 50 in of clear height. A Corvette is 48.6 in tall. A Miata is 48.6 in. A Boxster is 50.5 in and does not fit. A 911 at 51 in does not fit. A Mustang at 54 in does not fit. That is the list, and it is short.

On top, at the 9 ft 6 in minimum ceiling of 114 in, the upper car gets 58 in of headroom before an opener is subtracted. A Camry or Model 3 at 57 in is on the line; a Mustang at 54 in or a second Corvette fits comfortably. At a 10 ft ceiling the upper headroom grows to 64 in and a sedan fits with room.

The PL-6SR fits a garage that no full-rise parking lift will: a 1950s to 1980s house with a 9 ft 6 in to 10 ft 6 in ceiling, or a newer garage with a low door track or duct that brings the usable height under 11 ft. In a garage with 11 ft 6 in or more, it is the wrong lift; the PL-6000 costs $300 more and gives 16 in more rise, 2 in more deck width and an ALI listing.

The pairings that work are specific. Sports car below, sedan above, at a 10 ft ceiling: a Corvette under a Camry, a Miata under a Model 3. Two sports cars, at a 9 ft 6 in ceiling: a Corvette under a Mustang, a Miata under a Miata. That is a collector's lift, or an enthusiast's, more than a family's.

The 82 in drive-on width fits the cars this lift is for, since a Corvette is 76 in wide and a Camry 72 in, but not a crossover at 77 to 79 in plus mirrors. Platform length is 104 in, so a Corvette's 107 in wheelbase and a Camry's 111 in both need overhang; confirm the tire placement with the dealer.

At 1,800 lb crated the PL-6SR is the easiest parking lift here to install. The columns are shorter and lighter than full-rise columns, the platform sections are the same size as the PL-6000's, and a capable owner with two helpers can finish in a day. BendPak's manual is the best in the category, with photographs at each step, and the dealer network offers installation for buyers who prefer it.

The sequence is the class standard: anchor the columns plumb into 4 in of 3,000 psi concrete, bolt the platform together on the floor, hang it on the carriages, run the hydraulic line, set the equalizer cables for level travel and confirm the locks engage on every rise. The shorter rise means fewer lock positions and a shorter cable run, and the cons list credits the shorter hydraulic travel with quieter operation, which follows from a shorter cylinder stroke.

Power is 220V single phase on a dedicated circuit. An owner install with hired wiring comes in around $4,100 to $4,400; a dealer crew adds $500 to $700 on a lift this light. The 6 in lowered height gives gentle approach ramps, which matters for the low cars this lift exists to park.

The PL-6SR holds a parked vehicle on automatic mechanical locks in both columns that engage as the platform rises, so the stored car sits on steel and the hydraulics carry load only during travel. The circuit has a check valve against pump failure, a flow control on descent and a manual lowering path for a power outage, the same layout as the rest of BendPak's PL series.

The spec sheet for the PL-6SR lists its design as short rise and does not list a certification, where the PL-6000 and PL-7000XR are listed as ALI/ETL certified. Do not assume the sibling lifts' certification carries over. Check the Automotive Lift Institute directory for the current listing before buying on that basis, and if a permit office requires a certified lift, get the answer in writing from the BendPak dealer.

The practical safety point on a short-rise lift is clearance under the deck. With 50 in of space below, a car parked underneath has very little margin, and a roof rack, an antenna or a raised trunk can meet the platform structure. Measure the lower car to its highest point, not its published height.

The PL-6000 is the full-rise version at around $3,899: 6,000 lb, a 106 in by 96 in deck, 84 in of width, 72 in of rise, an 11 ft 6 in ceiling, ALI certified, 2,100 lb. In a garage tall enough for it, it is the better lift by every measure for $300. The PL-7000XR is the long-deck certified lift at around $4,499 with a 12 ft ceiling requirement; it is not a competitor to the SR so much as the opposite end of the same range.

The Triumph NSP-6S is the other low-ceiling option at around $3,299: 6,000 lb, a 100 in by 92 in deck, 80 in of width, 70 in of rise, an 11 ft ceiling, 1,850 lb, no certification and a thin manual. At 11 ft to the lowest obstruction it gives 14 in more rise than the SR and takes a crossover underneath, and it saves $300. At 10 ft 6 in it does not fit and the SR does.

So the line is 11 ft. Above it, the NSP-6S or a full-rise lift. Below it, the PL-6SR is the only parking lift here, and the question is whether the cars you own are low enough to use it.
