BendPak HD-9ST Review: Standard Width 4-Post Lift With 9,000-lb Capacity

The HD-9ST is the standard-width version of BendPak's 9,000 lb 4-post, 100 in across and 173 in long, with 82 in of maximum rise. Capacity covers every passenger vehicle a home garage is likely to hold: an F-150 at about 5,000 lb, a Tahoe at 5,600 lb, a Model X at 5,400 lb, all with meaningful margin.

The functional difference from the plain HD-9 is what comes with it. The ST includes a rolling jack, a bridge jack that sits across the runways and picks the vehicle off them so the wheels hang free. Without one, a 4-post lift can do oil changes, exhaust and fluid work but not brakes, wheel bearings or suspension. Buying that jack separately typically runs $500 or more, so including it changes the value calculation.

At 173 in the ST is also 4 in shorter than the HD-9, which is a small but real advantage in a shallow garage where the closed door and the back wall are 20 ft apart.

Full rise is 82 in, and BendPak's guidance for lifts in this class is 12 ft of clear ceiling. At 144 in that leaves roughly 62 in of space above the runways once the steel is subtracted. A Miata, a Corvette or a Camry parks up there. A crossover does not.

For service work the arithmetic is friendlier. Eighty-two inches of rise puts the runway underside above a six-foot adult's head, so you work standing rather than crouched. That is the single biggest quality-of-life difference between a full-height 4-post and the 70 to 73 in storage lifts, and it is why the ST is a better service tool than Triumph's NSS-8 despite similar capacity.

Check the lowest obstruction rather than the joists. Garage door tracks, opener rails, lights and any ductwork all live in the top foot of a garage, and a raised runway competes with an open sectional door for the same space. A high-lift door conversion is the usual fix.

Requirements are the residential norm for this class: 4 in of 3,000 psi concrete, anchor points clear of cracks and control joints, and four columns set plumb with the diagonals checked. A 4-post spreads its load across four base plates, which is why it is a gentler install than a 2-post that concentrates everything into two.

The order of operations that works is to lay out the anchor pattern in full, dry fit before drilling, stand the columns, then set the runways with three people. Cable equalization comes last and is the step that decides whether the lift travels level. Expect a day of assembly and a second session for adjustment.

Power is 220V single phase. That is an electrician, a breaker and a dedicated run in most houses, so budget $300 to $600 on top of the lift. Shipping weight is substantial and delivery is a liftgate freight appointment, not a package drop. Confirm the truck can reach your driveway before it is dispatched.

The HD-9ST is ALI certified, meaning the model was tested by an independent lab against the ANSI/ALI ALCTV standard and listed in the Automotive Lift Institute directory. That is unusual at this price and it is the main thing separating BendPak from the import brands, most of which self-certify.

The load parks on automatic mechanical locks in the columns; hydraulics carry weight only during travel. Lowering requires raising off the locks first, releasing them, then descending through a flow control valve, and there is a manual descent path for outages.

Owner reviews of BendPak 4-post lifts on Amazon are consistent about two things: the documentation is better than the category norm, and the company replaces damaged or missing parts without argument. The complaints are almost always about freight, since taking delivery of a crated lift at a residential address is genuinely awkward. Plan the delivery day with as much care as the installation and most of that friction disappears.

Against the plain HD-9 the ST is 4 in shorter and comes with the rolling jack. Given that the HD-9's Amazon listing has been running near $6,095 against dealer pricing around $3,000, the ST at roughly $3,300 is often the easier lift to actually buy at a sane price.

The HDS-14 is a different animal: 14,000 lb, 203 in of runway, 124 in wide and only 70 in of rise. It is a commercial lift for vans and duallies, it wants a bigger bay, and it works you stooped rather than upright. Unless something you own passes 9,000 lb, it is the wrong purchase.

The Triumph NSS-8 undercuts the ST substantially and has far more owner feedback behind it, over 145 Amazon ratings at 4.4 stars. It gives up the ALI listing, 1,000 lb of capacity and 10 in of rise. For storage the Triumph wins on value; for a lift you work under, the ST is worth the difference.
