Rotary SM14 Review: Professional Grade 14,000-lb Super Duty 4-Post Lift

Rotary has been building automotive lifts since the 1920s and its equipment is the default in dealership service departments across North America. That history matters in a specific and practical way: parts availability. A Rotary lift installed decades ago can still be serviced, because the company and its distributor network are still there and still stock components.

For a piece of equipment with a twenty-year service life bolted permanently to a floor, that outlasts any spec on the sheet. The lifts that become expensive are the ones where a cable, a lock pawl or a power unit is no longer available and the whole thing becomes scrap.

The SM14 sits at the top of Rotary's 4-post line at 14,000 lb, and the pricing reflects the brand as much as the steel. At around $6,299 it is the most expensive lift covered here. Whether that premium is rational depends entirely on whether the lift is a business asset or a hobby purchase.

Runway length at 230 in is the second longest in this group and it is aimed at commercial vehicles: extended vans, crew-cab duallies, cutaway chassis. On a shorter deck those vehicles fit with the tires near the ends, which loads the structure differently than the designer intended. At 230 in they sit centered.

The frame is 116 in wide, which is narrower than the Greg Smith GS-14 at 120 in and wider than a residential lift. That accommodates dual rear wheels without the floor space penalty of the widest decks.

Rotary specifies super duty steel sections throughout and a multi-layer premium finish rather than a single powder coat pass. Finish quality sounds cosmetic and is not: a lift in a shop lives with brake fluid, coolant, road salt off winter vehicles and constant impact from tools. The lifts that rust are the ones that were coated once and thinly. The 3-year comprehensive warranty is longer than BendPak, Dannmar, Atlas or Forward offer and shorter than Greg Smith's five.

Eighty-four inches is the highest rise in this group and it is the spec that makes the SM14 pleasant rather than merely capable. At full travel the runway underside sits well above head height, so a technician works upright under a raised truck for an entire job without the back pain that a 70 in lift produces.

The building has to earn that. Eighty-four inches of rise plus the height of the vehicle on the deck sets the requirement, so a 78 in dually raised fully needs about 162 in, or 13 ft 6 in, before any margin for lights and sprinklers. A 14 ft shop ceiling handles it comfortably. A 12 ft ceiling means running short of full travel with anything tall on the deck, which wastes the main reason to buy this lift over the shorter-rise heavy options.

Measure the lowest obstruction across the entire 116 by 230 in footprint. On a deck that long, one radiant heater or one sprinkler head in the wrong place sets the real ceiling.

The SM14 is ALI/ETL certified against the ANSI/ALI ALCTV standard and listed in the Automotive Lift Institute directory. On a lift rated for commercial vehicles in a paid workplace, that listing is the baseline expectation rather than a feature. Insurers ask for it and safety programs require it.

Load is carried on multi-position mechanical locks in each column, engaged automatically as the runways rise, with hydraulics working only during travel. Rotary's hydraulic package is built for duty cycles measured in lifts per day rather than per month, which is the difference between commercial and residential equipment that does not appear in any published number.

Installation is difficult and should be professional. A 230 in runway section is not something a crew moves by hand, slab requirements exceed the residential norm, and getting four super duty columns plumb over that span is measurement work. Power is 220V single phase. Freight arrives on a full-size truck needing a forklift at the receiving end.

BendPak's HDS-14LSX is the closest match: 14,000 lb, 237 in of deck, 82 in of rise, ALI certified, roughly $800 less. The two are genuinely comparable and the decision comes down to warranty and parts network. BendPak covers 1 year, Rotary 3, and both have real dealer support.

The Greg Smith GS-14 undercuts both at around $5,799 with 120 in of width and a 5-year warranty, but no ALI listing and a direct-sales support model. If certification is required, that removes it from consideration regardless of the warranty.

Rotary's own SM12 drops to 12,000 lb, which still covers every consumer vehicle including a loaded one-ton, on a smaller and cheaper frame. Unless the shop genuinely handles commercial chassis over 12,000 lb, the SM12 is the more rational Rotary and it keeps the certification, the finish and the parts network intact.
