Dannmar DP-8HD Review: Heavy Duty 8,000-lb Commercial Grade Parking Lift

Dannmar is a BendPak company, sold through BendPak dealers at a lower price and without the ALI certification the BendPak-branded lifts carry. Its parking range runs DP-7S, DP-8HD, DP-9, and the DP-8HD is the middle one: 8,000 lb, a 114 in by 100 in platform, 88 in of drive-on width, a 74 in rise, an 8 in lowered height, dual automatic mechanical locks, 2,450 lb crated, around $4,399.

Against the DP-7S at around $3,799 it adds 1,000 lb, 2 in of deck width, 2 in of rise and the second lock per column, and it asks for 4 in more ceiling and 250 lb more install weight. Against the DP-9 at around $4,599 it gives up 1,000 lb, 4 in of deck width and 2 in of rise, and it saves $200, 250 lb and 4 in of platform width in a tight bay.

The 8,000 lb rating covers a Tahoe at 5,600 lb, an F-150 at up to 5,700 lb, a Rivian R1T at 7,000 lb. The 88 in deck gives an 80 in F-150 body 4 in per side, a workable margin, and an 82 in Ram 3 in, a tight one.

The minimum ceiling is 12 ft, or 144 in, with a 74 in rise. That leaves 70 in of headroom on the upper platform at the minimum ceiling before an opener or lighting is subtracted. The vehicles that need 8,000 lb are mostly too tall to go on top at 12 ft: an F-150 is 77 in, a Tahoe 76 in, an Explorer 70 in and on the line. They need about 12 ft 8 in to 13 ft to the lowest obstruction.

So at 12 ft the DP-8HD parks a car or crossover on top and the truck underneath. The deck underside at full rise is about 66 in off the floor, so a 76 in truck below means stopping the platform on a lower lock and giving up headroom above, which is where the dual locks earn their keep by offering more stopping positions. At 13 ft the truck goes on top and the car below.

The 100 in platform width is the DP-8HD's quiet advantage over the DP-9. In a double garage with a 9 ft door and a wall on one side, a 104 in platform plus columns can leave no walkway; the 100 in deck leaves 4 in more. That is often the difference that decides between these two lifts.

At 2,450 lb the DP-8HD is a moderate install: a day and a half for a crew of two with a pallet jack for the platform sections. Because Dannmar sells through BendPak dealers, most buyers can have the dealer install it, and on a lift this heavy that is the sensible route. The dealer crew anchors the columns plumb into 4 in of 3,000 psi concrete, assembles and hangs the 114 in platform, runs the hydraulic line, sets the equalizer cables for level travel and confirms both lock positions engage evenly on each column.

The column loads at 8,000 lb are meaningfully higher than at 6,000 lb, and the floor should be known. A 1990s or newer garage on a 4 in slab is normally fine; an older or unknown floor should be cored.

Power is 220V single phase on a dedicated circuit. With freight, an electrician and dealer installation the project runs around $5,700 to $6,200. That is about $200 more than a dealer-installed Challenger CP-8, which is the comparison to keep in mind through this whole review.

The DP-8HD parks its load on dual automatic mechanical locks, two independent positions per column that engage as the platform rises, so a stored truck rests on steel in four places and the hydraulics carry load only during travel. The circuit has a check valve against pump failure, a flow control on descent and a manual lowering valve for a power outage. The second lock per column is the feature that separates the DP-8HD from the DP-7S and from the single-lock Triumph NSP-8 and Forward FPL-8XL, and at 8,000 lb we consider it worth having.

There is no ALI/ETL certification. The 8,000 lb rating is Dannmar's own, not one verified by an independent lab to the ANSI/ALI ALCTV standard, and that is the DP-8HD's exposed flank, because the Challenger CP-8 is certified and $200 cheaper. A buyer who needs the listing for a permit or an insurer has no reason to choose the Dannmar. A buyer who does not is paying $200 for the BendPak dealer relationship and the second lock, which is a fair trade and not an obvious one.

Maintenance is the usual yearly list, with both lock positions checked on every rise.

The Challenger CP-8 is the direct rival at around $4,199: 8,000 lb, a 112 in by 100 in deck, 88 in of drive-on width, a 74 in rise, a 12 ft ceiling, ALI certified, 2,350 lb, sold and installed through Snap-on's Challenger dealers. It is $200 cheaper, certified and 100 lb lighter, with a single lock per column and 2 in less platform length. On paper the Challenger wins. The DP-8HD answers with the second lock and BendPak's dealer and parts network, which for a buyer already served by a BendPak dealer is a real answer.

The DP-9 is around $4,599: 9,000 lb, a 118 in by 104 in deck, 92 in of width, a 76 in rise, 2,700 lb. For a Ram or a long-bed the extra 4 in of width is worth $200; for an F-150 in a tight bay the DP-8HD's narrower platform is the better fit.

The DP-7S is around $3,799: 7,000 lb, an 86 in deck, an 11 ft 8 in ceiling, 2,200 lb. For a household without a truck, it is $600 better spent elsewhere.
