Dannmar D-12 Review: Reliable 12,000-lb 4-Post Lift for Serious Garages

Dannmar is part of the BendPak group, and the D-12 reads like a lift built to sit under BendPak's own pricing without embarrassing it. Twelve thousand pounds of capacity is the interesting number. It is above what any passenger vehicle needs and below the 14,000 lb commercial tier, which puts it in the band occupied by heavy-duty pickups and small work trucks.

A three-quarter-ton diesel crew cab loaded for towing can reach 9,500 lb. A one-ton with a service body goes higher. Those vehicles push a 9,000 lb lift to its rating and sit comfortably inside 12,000 lb. If that describes what you own, the D-12 is the right class of lift.

At 108 in wide and 203 in long, the frame is bigger than a residential 4-post and smaller than the 237 in commercial decks. That middle size is genuinely useful and it is also the thing to measure carefully, because 203 in plus ramps needs close to 19 ft of garage depth.

Maximum rise is 78 in, which sits between the 70 to 73 in storage lifts and the 82 to 85 in service lifts. For working underneath, 78 in puts the runway underside right around a tall adult's head. Most people work upright under it; a six-foot-four owner will duck.

For stacking, the useful figure is what remains above the runway. A 12 ft ceiling gives 144 in, and taking off 78 in of rise leaves roughly 66 in before the runway steel is counted. That parks a sedan or a sports car on top and nothing taller. A 13 ft ceiling opens the door to a small crossover.

Because Dannmar does not publish a minimum ceiling in the same place as its other specs, work backwards from the rise: 78 in of travel plus the height of the vehicle going up plus a few inches of margin is the number your building has to beat. Measure to the lowest obstruction over the lift footprint, not to the joists, since door tracks and light fixtures live in exactly that space.

Concrete requirements follow the class: 4 in of 3,000 psi with anchor points clear of cracks and control joints. On a 12,000 lb lift there is less room for optimism about an old slab than on a 9,000 lb one, so if the garage floor is an unknown pour from decades ago, have it cored or get a contractor opinion before drilling.

Assembly is a two-person job across a full day, with a third pair of hands wanted when the 203 in runways go onto the carriages. Set the columns plumb, check diagonals rather than just the sides, then equalize the cables so the deck travels level. That last step is where a 4-post either behaves or does not.

The documentation is the weak point of the package. It is workable but thin compared with what BendPak ships, and first-time installers will spend time interpreting diagrams. Power is 220V single phase driving a 2 HP pump, which is louder in operation than the premium units, though noise on a lift matters only during the seconds it is moving.

The D-12 uses multi-position automatic locks that engage as the runways rise, so the parked load sits on steel rather than on hydraulic pressure. That is the standard and correct architecture for a 4-post lift, and it is why one can hold a vehicle for months without concern. Lowering means raising off the locks, releasing them, then descending under flow control.

The 2-year limited warranty is notable. BendPak covers its own 4-post lifts for 1 year, so Dannmar doubles it on a lift that shares a corporate parent. That is a straightforward argument in the D-12's favor.

What is not included is a rolling jack. Without one the lift does oil changes, exhaust work and anything reachable with the tires loaded, and it cannot do brakes or suspension. A bridge jack for a 108 in runway spacing runs $500 or more. Price that in from the start rather than discovering it later, because it moves the real cost of the D-12 close to $4,800.

The Atlas 412 is the closest direct rival on capacity and price, and the two trade the usual things: Atlas has a larger dealer network for accessories, Dannmar has the BendPak parts pipeline behind it and the longer warranty. Neither carries an ALI listing, so certification is not a tiebreaker.

BendPak's HDS-14 is the step up: 14,000 lb, 124 in wide, 203 in long, ALI certified, and only 70 in of rise. It costs substantially more and works you stooped. Take it if the vehicles are genuinely commercial; take the D-12 if they are heavy pickups.

Dannmar's own D-10S is the step down at 10,000 lb, which covers every consumer vehicle and takes less floor. If nothing in the garage passes 9,000 lb, the D-10S saves money and space without giving up anything you would use. The D-12 earns its extra size only when the truck is genuinely heavy or genuinely long.
