BendPak HD-14T Review: Tall 4-Post Lift for High-Ceiling Garages

Rise height is the number that decides whether a 4-post lift is pleasant to work under. At 70 in, the HDS-14 puts the runway underside a little below head height for an average adult, so everything happens bent over. At 82 in the same person stands upright with the vehicle floor above their head. That is the difference the HD-14T sells, and it is worth more day to day than any spec on the sheet.

The second use of tall columns is stacking. With 82 in of travel and enough building height, a shop can park one vehicle above another and still walk between them, which is how a 14,000 lb lift earns its footprint in a storage role.

Everything else matches the HDS-14. Same 14,000 lb rating, same 124 in width, same 203 in of runway, same commercial-grade column section. This is a height variant, not a different lift, and BendPak prices it accordingly at about $375 over the standard model.

BendPak lists 12 ft as the minimum and recommends 14 ft. Take the minimum literally and the numbers get tight: 144 in of ceiling minus 82 in of rise leaves 62 in, and the runway structure eats into that before a stored vehicle does. At 12 ft the HD-14T works as a service lift with full standing room underneath and as a storage lift only for low cars.

At 14 ft, or 168 in, the picture changes completely. Subtract 82 in of rise and roughly 68 in of clearance remains for a vehicle on top, so a crossover or a van parks above a car. That is the configuration the tall columns were designed around.

There is a practical detail people miss. Lights, sprinkler heads, radiant tube heaters and garage door tracks all live in the top two feet of a shop. Measure to the lowest obstruction over the lift footprint, not to the joists. A 14 ft building with a heater at 11 ft 6 in is an 11 ft 6 in building.

Taller columns make an already demanding install harder. The column sections are longer and heavier, they want a hoist or a telehandler to stand up, and getting four of them plumb over a 203 in span takes patience and a good level. Small angular errors at the base multiply over the column height, and a column that leans an eighth of an inch at the top will bind the carriage.

Slab requirements exceed the residential norm that covers a 9,000 lb lift. BendPak's heavy 4-post manuals call for a thicker, higher-strength pour and a wider anchor pattern. Have the slab verified rather than assumed, because the consequence of a bad anchor on a 14,000 lb lift is not a warranty claim.

Power is 220V single phase to the power unit. Freight arrives on a full-size truck and the crate is not something a residential driveway handles gracefully. Budget for professional installation. This is the lift in the category where doing it yourself is the wrong call.

The HD-14T is ALI/ETL certified to the ANSI/ALI ALCTV standard and appears in the Automotive Lift Institute directory. On a lift rated for commercial vehicles in a paid workplace, that listing is what an insurer or an inspector will ask about first. Uncertified 14,000 lb lifts exist and they are cheaper; they are also difficult to defend if anything goes wrong.

The load parks on automatic mechanical locks in all four columns. The hydraulic system carries weight only while the runways travel, and there is a manual descent path for power failures. Taller columns mean more lock positions, so the lift can be parked at a working height that suits the job rather than only at full rise.

Wear items are the equalizer cables, the lock pawls and the anchor bolts, all of which want an annual inspection. BendPak publishes the intervals and stocks the parts, which is the practical advantage of buying from a manufacturer that has been building lifts for decades.

Against the HDS-14 the choice is building height. Same capacity, same footprint, 12 in more rise, 6 in more required ceiling. If the shop is tall, take the HD-14T. If the ceiling is 11 ft 6 in, the HDS-14 is the only one of the two that fits.

The Triumph NOS9000XLT attacks from below on price: 9,000 lb, 196 in of runway, 83 in of rise and a 12 ft ceiling requirement, for well under half the HD-14T's money. It has no ALI listing and lighter construction, but for a homeowner storing and occasionally servicing full-size trucks it covers the same ground.

The HD-9 is the reality check. It rises the same 82 in, needs the same 12 ft ceiling, carries the same certification, and costs roughly half. The only reason to move past it is a vehicle heavier than 9,000 lb or longer than 177 in. Most buyers do not have one.
