Permanent 2-post and 4-post lifts are not built for a driveway slab. A portable lift on a level, sound section of concrete can work, with real limits on slope, weather and storage. Here is where the line is.

Short answer: you can use a portable car lift on a driveway if the slab is sound, the spot is level, and you bring the lift back inside when the job is done. You should not install a 2-post or 4-post lift on a driveway. The rest of this post is the reasoning, because the difference between those two answers is what keeps a car from sliding off a lift on a slope.

Why permanent lifts do not belong on a driveway

A 2-post lift is only as strong as the concrete its anchors sit in. The manuals for the 2-post lifts we cover call for a minimum 4 in slab of 3,000 psi concrete, cured, level, and free of cracks and joints near the anchor points. That is a garage floor spec. Driveways are a different pour: they are commonly placed at a lower strength, often without rebar, cut with control joints every 8 to 12 ft, and they crack along those joints as the ground moves. A wedge anchor set within a few inches of a joint or a crack has a fraction of its rated holding power, and there is no way to know where the slab is hollow underneath. Then there is slope. A driveway is built to drain, typically at 1 to 2 percent, which is 1/8 to 1/4 in per foot. Across a 2-post lift's roughly 12 ft footprint that is 1.5 to 3 in of fall from one column to the other. 2-post manuals allow a small amount of shimming under one baseplate to correct a floor that is a little out of level; 3 in is not a little. A column shimmed that far is standing on a stack of steel plates, and the load path through the anchors is no longer what the lift was tested for.

Weather does the rest. A 2-post lift has a hydraulic power unit and, for most models, a 220V circuit at the column; neither is rated for rain. Equalizer cables, safety lock springs, and arm restraints rust when they live outside. Then the paperwork: a lift bolted to a driveway is a permanent structure in most jurisdictions, which brings in building permits, setback rules, HOA covenants, and a homeowner's insurance conversation you do not want to have after the fact.

A 4-post lift avoids the anchor problem, since most can stand freestanding, but not the others. It has the same slope issue on a bigger footprint, a runway approach ramp that has to sit on a level surface to load safely, and 1,600 lb or more of steel with a car on top of it standing outside in wind and rain. What does work outside: a portable lift on a level slab

A portable frame lift is not anchored, runs on 110V, and lifts the car by its frame from two low frames that sit on the surface. That removes the slab-strength problem and the permit problem in one move. What it does not remove is the level requirement. QuickJack's own setup instructions call for a flat, hard, level surface, and that is the whole test for a driveway: put a 4 ft level on the concrete where each frame will sit, in both directions. If the bubble is centered, the spot works. If it is not, the car will be raised on a tilt, the frames will load unevenly, and the locks are being asked to do something they were not designed to do.

In practice, the flat apron just outside the garage door is the usual candidate. Driveways are often poured with a level pad there before the slope starts. Older concrete is fine if it is intact; concrete with heaved sections, spalling, or a visible crack under a frame is not. Skip pavers, gravel, and asphalt on a warm day; asphalt softens under a concentrated load and a frame that sinks 1/4 in on one side is a frame that is no longer level.

If the budget is tighter, the Albott 7,000 lb portable lift does the same basic job at about $1,200, with extension plates in the box for longer lift-point spans. The limits of a driveway lift

  • Slope tolerance is close to zero. The lift does not have a published slope rating because the instruction is level, full stop. A 1 percent grade is 1/8 in per foot; over a 51 in frame that is over half an inch of tilt, and the car's weight starts pushing sideways on the locks. Find a level spot or do not lift.
  • Rain ends the job. The power unit is not weatherproof, the hydraulic couplers pick up grit, and a wet creeper on wet concrete is its own hazard. Check the forecast, and have a plan for lowering the car if it starts before you finish.
  • Power comes from the garage. A 110V lift on a driveway is running on an extension cord from a GFCI outlet. Use a 12-gauge cord, keep it short, and keep it out of the path of the car.
  • Store it inside, every time. Frames and a power unit left on a driveway overnight collect water in the cylinders and rust at the pivots. A lift used outdoors should be hosed off, dried, lowered fully, and stood against a garage wall the same day. Our small-garage lift guide covers wall storage.
  • Do not lift on the street or on a sidewalk. Grade, drainage crowns, and the fact that it is not your slab all apply.

When a low-rise scissor or a set of ramps is the better answer

Be honest about the job. An oil change, an exhaust inspection, a quick look at a leak: a pair of ramps and two wheel chocks on the level apron is faster than any lift, tolerates a very slight grade as long as the car is pointed uphill and chocked, and stores on a hook. A brake job needs the wheel off, which ramps cannot do; that is a floor jack and stands, or a portable lift.

A low-rise scissor lift (the single-platform kind that raises a car 26 to 28 in and stays on the floor) is the wrong tool for a driveway. It is heavier than a frame lift, it is meant to be driven over where it sits, and moving one across a driveway and back into the garage every time is the kind of chore that ends with it left outside. The rule we use: if the job takes under an hour and the wheels stay on, ramps. If the wheels come off or you will be under the car for a while, a portable frame lift on a level, dry, sound slab.   • Concrete, not asphalt or pavers, with no cracks or heaves under either frame position.
  • 4 ft level reads centered in both directions at both frame positions.
  • Dry forecast for the length of the job plus an hour.
  • GFCI outlet, 12-gauge extension cord, routed away from the car.
  • Frames set on the manufacturer's lift points, locks engaged before anyone goes under.
  • Lift lowered, cleaned, and stored inside when done.
