Types of Car Storage Lifts

Disadvantages: Large footprint, requires ceiling height, approach ramps add length to the setup.

Scissor-Style Parking Lifts

Platform lifts that use a scissor mechanism to raise the vehicle. These have a lower profile when collapsed and don't require as much ceiling height. But they're less common in the residential market, harder to find parts for, and generally more expensive than a comparable 4-post.

What to Look For in a Storage Lift

Capacity. Your heaviest vehicle plus 25% margin minimum. If your heaviest vehicle is a 5,500-lb truck, you want at least 7,000-lb capacity. I'd go 8,000+.

Rise height. This determines how much clearance you have underneath for the second vehicle. Most 4-post lifts rise about 5.5-6.5 feet. Your bottom vehicle's height plus a few inches of comfort clearance needs to fit under the raised platform.

Runway length. Long enough for your longest vehicle with some margin. A crew cab truck might need 200+ inches of runway. Check the spec before buying.

Runway width and spacing. Wide enough for your widest vehicle's track width. Most standard lifts handle most vehicles, but wide-body trucks and some SUVs can be tight.

Drip trays. A lifted vehicle that leaks oil will drip on the car below. Some lifts include drip trays in the runways. If yours doesn't, buy aftermarket trays. This is especially important for storage — cars sitting for weeks or months will find new and exciting places to leak from.

Ceiling Height Math

This is where storage lift dreams go to die. Let me walk you through the calculation:

Minimum ceiling height = vehicle on top height + lift rise height + 6 inches clearance

Example: Honda Accord (57" tall) on a lift with 70" of rise = 127" + 6" = 133" = 11 feet 1 inch of ceiling needed.

Example: F-150 (77" tall) on a lift with 70" of rise = 147" + 6" = 153" = 12 feet 9 inches needed.

Standard residential garage ceiling: 8 feet (96 inches). Do you see the problem?

Storage lifts in standard 8-foot garages simply don't work if you want the top vehicle at full rise. Some people install lifts in standard garages and only raise the vehicle partway — high enough to park a car underneath but not at full rise. This works if the bottom vehicle is short (like a Miata or a compact sedan) and you don't mind the tight clearance. But it's a compromise.

Protecting the Stored Vehicle

Vehicles sitting on a lift for weeks or months need some attention:

  • Battery tender. Connect a trickle charger so the battery doesn't die. Run the cable down a column — don't let it dangle near moving parts.
