Installation Considerations for 4-Post Lifts

Four-post lifts have some specific requirements that differ from 2-posts:

Floor space. A 4-post lift has a bigger footprint than a 2-post because of the runways. You'll need roughly 18-20 feet of length and 10-12 feet of width. Measure your available space carefully, including enough room to walk around the lift and open car doors.

Ceiling height. You need your vehicle height plus the rise height plus a few inches of clearance. For a truck that sits 6.5 feet tall on a lift with 6 feet of rise, you need 13+ feet of ceiling. Standard 8-foot garage ceilings won't work for full-rise storage of anything taller than a sedan.

Concrete. Same 4-inch minimum, 6-inch preferred, 3,000 PSI requirement as 2-post lifts. The load is spread across four columns instead of two, so the per-anchor load is actually lower. But don't skimp — the total weight is still the same.

Do You Need Rolling Jacks?

A standard 4-post lift raises the car on runways, which means the wheels stay on the ground (on the runways). To do brake work, tire rotations, or any suspension work, you need the wheels off. That's where rolling jacks come in — they're jack stands that roll along the runways, lift the car off the runway surface, and let you remove the wheels.

Most 4-post lifts don't include rolling jacks. They're an add-on that costs $400-$800 per set. If you plan to do service work on your 4-post lift (not just storage), budget for them upfront.

If you mainly use the lift for storage and only occasionally do tire work, you can get by with a floor jack and jack stands on the runway. It's slower but saves money.
